Suite of a thousand faces

for symphonic orchestra

Suite of a Thousand Faces (for Symphonic Orchestra): Is a three movement odyssey inspired by the writings of Joseph Campbell, who believed all depictions of heroes go through the cyclical pattern in order to make a great story. From a call to action, to death and resurrection, these concepts have fueled our imaginations and can be seen from Star Wars to the Bible. 

This piece is a musical adventure through the hero's journey with one twist: the hero realizes he is part of a grand cycle and does what ever he can to break it. This is represented in stylistic changes between traditional Eurocentric concepts clashing with Afrocentric concepts, and then perfectly merging them together in the final act.

The Waters of Mars

for symphonic orchestra

This piece is a tone poem based on a Doctor Who episode of the same nomenclature. It places you in the Doctor's shoes as he comes to grips with being powerless in the face of fixed points in time. It explores his particular stages of grief over being a time lord yet not having the ability to save the lives of the first human colonizers of Mars because history demands that they die prematurely to inspire future humans to travel further and more efficiently in space as a result. 

This is dedicated to my loving and supportive family: Eleanor Choate, Ali Choate, Penny Young, and Jenny Garden.

The Fires Of Pompeii

ft. heléna walsh on piano & nicolas cardot on euphonium

This piece was inspired by two fictional accounts of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius that laid the city of Pompeii in ruins. One is a Doctor Who episode that it gets its namesake from, where the doctor realizes that trying to fix a fixed point in time can lead to the disaster he was hoping to avoid. The second account is from a book series I had when I took high school latin class. It followed the assuringly mundane life of a banker named Caecilius. In the first book we learn how to say things like "dog" and "money" as we go through his routines. But, if one stuck through to Latin II, you realize that Caecilius lived in Pompeii and the vocabulary quickly shifted from day to day objects to literally "fire" and "death."

This piece is dedicated to my late high school Latin Teacher, Nancy Druskin.

Last Stop: WonderLand

for solo piano

Last Stop: Wonderland is about transitions. It reminisces about the days I would take the blue line home after a rigorous class schedule in Boston. It was cold and melancholy underground, but then when the train would finally go above ground there would be this wash of hope over me. Going to a jazz school when you weren't a jazz musician was hard. This piece dabbles in jazz but with a fluid tempo to simulate the learning process, while trying to find comfort in all the new sights and sounds.

It is dedicated to my friend, Kevin Gomez as a means of comfort when he made his own decision to leave our hometown for college.

The Man Who Laughs

for symphonic orchestra

The Man Who Laughs is a deep study on my favorite antagonist in comic book history: the Joker. Its motivic ideas either mimic or mock phrases of various Joker performances over the years. It showcases each of these ideas, or jokes as I refer to them, with their very own themes in continuous movements, before joining together in an amalgamation of pure insanity. By the end of it, the audience won't know whether they've been fooled by Joker, or have become one themselves.

This is dedicated to Mark Hamill, Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, and Heath Ledger.

Conversations with Dead People was a piece I wrote quite in 2010 to commemorate the anniversary of the passing of a close friend, Randy Medina. I still often think about all the adventures I've been on, and all the ups and downs that growing up has to offer, and what it would be like if he was still around to laugh and cry with. 

It was premiered in 2013 by the New Score Chamber Orchestra in Orlando, Florida.
